Saint-Martin-d'Hères Map Poster & Print
Saint-Martin-d'Hères is directly east of Grenoble, on the flat floor of the Grésivaudan valley. From above, the town reads as a continuation of the city: long avenues, blocks of housing from several decades, and the ring road and rail lines that cross the valley.
Its best-known feature is the Domaine universitaire. Most of the Grenoble university campus stands here, spread out across a wide area on the south bank of the Isère. On the map it is a large open zone of long buildings, lawns, sports grounds and tram lines, clearly different from the tighter residential streets to the south.
A Saint-Martin-d'Hères map poster places all of this inside the Alpine setting. The Isère bends along the northern edge, and the steep slopes of the surrounding massifs start where the streets end. It is the level valley floor that lets the town spread out so evenly.

Curve of the Isère
The river loops along the northern boundary, giving the composition a strong curved edge against the straight streets.
Valley floor
The town fills level ground between mountain slopes, so roads run long and straight until they meet the steeper terrain.
