Sallanches lies in Haute-Savoie, where the Arve valley widens before it turns toward Chamonix. The town is known for its view: on clear days the Mont Blanc massif fills the horizon to the southeast. On a map, the valley floor is a rare stretch of level ground among steep slopes, and the town spreads across it between the river, the rail line and the motorway.
In 1840 a large fire destroyed most of the old town. It was rebuilt on a more orderly plan with straight streets and a central square, and this gives Sallanches a noticeably regular core for a mountain town. Outside the centre the pattern loosens, with residential streets, sports grounds and lakes in the valley bottom, and roads climbing the slopes toward the villages above.

The river Arve runs through the flat valley bottom, with the railway and the motorway close alongside. Together they form a strong band of parallel lines across the map.
Hairpin slopes
On the valley sides, roads climb in switchbacks toward the villages and pastures above. Their zigzags add texture to the edges of the poster and suggest steep ground just beyond.
