São Carlos lies in the centre of São Paulo state, on rolling uplands surrounded by farmland. The historic centre is laid out on a regular grid of blocks around its main squares, and newer neighbourhoods spread outward over gentle hills. From above, the orderly core and the looser outer districts show clearly how the city grew.
The city is best known as a centre of science and education. A campus of the University of São Paulo sits close to the centre, and the Federal University of São Carlos covers a large, green site on the edge of the city with its own network of roads and woodland.
