Sélestat lies on the Alsace plain between Strasbourg and Colmar, beside the Ill river. On a map, its historic centre is a compact oval of narrow streets. It is easy to see where the old town was once enclosed by walls, because the dense centre stands out clearly from the broader streets and boulevards around it.
Two large churches, Sainte-Foy and Saint-Georges, rise from the old centre, and their squares show up as open spaces in the dense street pattern. East of the town, the Ill and its side channels run through the Ried, a wet lowland area. On a map, curving waterways and scattered fields replace the city blocks.
Sélestat is known for its Humanist Library, which holds manuscripts and early printed books from the Renaissance. The town also has a document from 1521 that is often cited as one of the earliest written references to a Christmas tree.
