Shima belongs to Chongqing, the vast municipality on the eastern side of the Sichuan Basin where almost nothing is flat. Seen from above, the town is shaped by terrain first and planning second. Streets curve to follow ridgelines and valley floors, and the built-up area fits into the gaps the hills allow rather than spreading evenly in every direction.
Around the centre the land breaks into small plots and terraces, many cut into slopes over long periods of cultivation. Roads loop and switch back to connect scattered villages, and minor streams gather in the low ground between rises. The result on paper is dense with curves, a very different texture from the rectilinear towns of the northern plains.
