Sooke lies on the southern shore of Vancouver Island, west of Victoria, where the land meets the Strait of Juan de Fuca. The map is shaped by water. Sooke Harbour and the wider Sooke Basin behind it form a large, enclosed inlet, and the town spreads along its northern and eastern shores, with forested hills rising inland.
The most striking line on the map is Whiffin Spit, a narrow finger of land that nearly closes the harbour mouth. Highway 14, the West Coast Road, runs through the town and continues toward the rugged coastline beyond, while the Sooke River comes down from the north to meet the basin, passing the well-known rock pools of the Sooke Potholes upstream.
