Suceava lies in north-eastern Romania on a plateau above the Suceava River, in the historic region of Bukovina. From 1388 to 1565 it was the capital of the Principality of Moldavia, and the map still shows traces of that role. The old centre occupies high ground, with streets curving around its churches, while the fortress ruins stand on a spur overlooking the river valley.
The Seat Fortress, associated with Stephen the Great, overlooks the valley on the eastern side of town. Close to the centre stands the Monastery of Saint John the New, whose church is part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing. Suceava is also the usual starting point for visits to the painted monasteries of Bukovina, known for their exterior frescoes.
