Terek lies in the north-east of Kabardino-Balkaria, on the river that gives it its name. The Terek is one of the major rivers of the North Caucasus, flowing from the high mountains towards the Caspian Sea, and on the map its braided channel and wooded banks form a strong, irregular edge beside the town.
The town itself is laid out mostly on a regular grid, with long, straight streets and deep house plots with gardens, common to the settlements of the Caucasian foothill plain. Roads and a railway line run through it, and around it the flat, fertile ground is divided into large agricultural fields. On clear days the mountains are visible to the south, though they sit beyond the frame of the map.
