Vanves is a commune in the Hauts-de-Seine department, directly on the southern edge of Paris just beyond the boulevard périphérique. It covers a small area and is one of the more densely populated communes in France, and the map shows it. Short streets, tightly packed blocks and very little open land run continuously into the city on the other side of the ring road.
The railway from Gare Montparnasse cuts across the commune on its way south-west, drawing a broad band through the streets. Among the dense blocks, one of the largest open spaces belongs to the Lycée Michelet, whose grounds occupy the park of a former seventeenth-century château. The Parc Frédéric-Pic adds another patch of green nearby.
