Varese lies in northern Lombardy, close to the Swiss border, on a patchwork of low hills that rise toward the Campo dei Fiori massif. The city never developed a single dense grid. Instead its districts, once separate villages, spread along ridges and valleys joined by curving roads. On a map that gives it an open, branching texture, with green pockets between clusters of streets.
To the west lies Lake Varese, a smooth oval of water edged by reeds and small settlements, and beyond it the larger Lago Maggiore. North of the centre, the pilgrimage route of the Sacro Monte climbs a mountainside past a sequence of chapels to the hilltop village of Santa Maria del Monte, part of a UNESCO World Heritage listing of sacred mountains in Piedmont and Lombardy.
Varese is often called the garden city, a name earned by the villas and formal parks built by Milanese families, and by the Estense gardens behind the town hall, laid out in the eighteenth century.
