Vasto sits on a headland above the Adriatic, in southern Abruzzo. From above, the old town forms a dense, irregular knot of streets at the top of the hill, bounded by the edge of the cliff facing the sea. Below it, the coastline curves south in a wide bay, and the seaside district of Marina di Vasto stretches along the shore with its more regular streets.
The historic centre includes the Palazzo d'Avalos, once home to a noble family whose name is closely tied to the town, and a panoramic walkway along the edge of the old town with views across the gulf. Vasto is also the birthplace of the poet Gabriele Rossetti, father of the painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti.
