Lake Viljandi
The lake fills a long, narrow valley below the town. On the poster it becomes a strong, elongated shape that anchors the whole composition and sets the direction of the streets.

Viljandi Map Poster & Print
Viljandi stands on high ground above Lake Viljandi, a narrow lake that lies in a deep glacial valley. That shape is plain on any map. The town sits on the upland to the north and west, and the long, slender lake runs below it, with steep green slopes dropping between the streets and the water.
The oldest part of town clusters near the castle hills, where the ruins of a Livonian Order castle survive among parkland and moats. A suspension footbridge crosses one of the ravines there. Beyond the medieval core, later streets spread across the plateau in a looser pattern of houses, gardens and tree-lined roads.
Viljandi is known across Estonia for music. Every summer the castle hills host the Viljandi Folk Music Festival, and the town is home to the Estonian Traditional Music Centre. A Viljandi map poster brings together the lake, the ravines and the old centre, which makes it a fitting piece for anyone who has spent a festival week there.

Castle hills
Earthworks and moats around the ruined Order castle form a knot of curving paths and green space beside the old town. It is one of the most distinctive details on the map.
Valley slopes
Wooded slopes separate the upland streets from the lakeshore. They leave a band of open space that frames the town and gives the plan its sense of height.
