Vyborg grew around a Swedish castle founded in 1293 on a small island in the strait between two bays. From above, the geography is still the first thing you notice: a knuckle of land pushing into the water, the castle island just off its tip, and inlets and skerries breaking the shoreline into irregular shapes on every side.
The old town on the peninsula keeps a tight pattern of short, crooked streets, with fragments of fortifications and the Round Tower near the former market square. Inland the layout loosens into broader blocks laid out in later centuries, and to the north the landscape park of Monrepos spreads across a rocky shore, its paths winding among granite outcrops and old trees.
The city belonged to Sweden, the Russian Empire and Finland in turn, and its buildings reflect each period, including Alvar Aalto's library.
