Highway spine
The main road from Freetown crosses the town as one strong, continuous line. Most of the local street network branches off it.

Waterloo Map Poster & Print
Waterloo is on the eastern side of the Freetown Peninsula, a short drive from the capital, where the peninsula's forested hills descend toward flatter mainland. The main road east out of Freetown runs straight through the town. On a map, most of its streets branch off that road into a spreading pattern of lanes and residential plots.
The town was founded in the early nineteenth century as a settlement for liberated Africans and former soldiers, and it is named after the battle of 1815. It has grown quickly in recent decades, especially during and after the civil war, as people arrived from other parts of the country. Newer neighbourhoods now reach well beyond the older core.
A Waterloo map poster shows a town that is still taking shape. The density of the streets fades gradually into farmland and bush. The highway gives the composition a clear spine with irregular lanes around it, and in wider framings the hills of the peninsula add texture along the western edge.

Organic lanes
Away from the highway, the streets follow no strict plan. They form an irregular, fine-grained web that shows how the town grew outward over time.
Peninsula hills
To the west, the land rises into the hills of the Freetown Peninsula. The roads thin out there, and the edge of the frame turns quiet and open.
