West Roxbury is the southwestern corner of Boston, and its map feels more like a garden suburb than a city district. Streets curve over gentle hills, lined by rows of single-family houses. Along the western and southern edges, the Charles River loops past, with marshes and conservation land beside it. Centre Street runs through the middle as the neighbourhood's main commercial line.
Large green spaces frame the area. Millennium Park, built on former landfill beside the Charles, is one of the biggest open spaces in the city. Wooded reservations and long parkways, such as the VFW Parkway, form clear boundaries. The neighbourhood's history includes Brook Farm, the utopian community founded in the 1840s by figures linked to the Transcendentalist movement.
