Yao lies in the east of Osaka Prefecture, on the flat Kawachi plain between central Osaka and the mountains that mark the border with Nara. From above, the city is a dense mix of houses, workshops and factories, with railway lines crossing it from west to east and a small airport occupying an open rectangle in the south.
The eastern side of the city rises into the Ikoma Mountains, and here the street pattern changes completely. Roads become fewer and more winding, and forests cover the slopes. Yao is known for its manufacturing industries and for the Kawachi Ondo, a traditional style of folk song and dance associated with the surrounding region and its summer festivals.
