Zarand sits on a wide, dry plain in Kerman province in south-eastern Iran, north-west of the city of Kerman. From above, the town has a compact, fairly regular layout. Main avenues cross the centre, and residential blocks fill the spaces between them. The countryside around it is mostly open desert and scattered farmland, with mountains rising in the distance.
The area is known for coal. Mines in the surrounding hills have long supplied Iran's steel industry, and industrial sites on the edge of town reflect that role. On a map this shows up as larger plots and service roads beyond the residential core, which gives the outskirts a different texture from the tight blocks at the centre.
