Afyonkarahisar grew at the foot of a dramatic volcanic outcrop that rises abruptly from the plain, with the ruins of a castle on its summit. The name itself refers to that landmark, the black fortress. On the map the rock is an unmistakable blank shape in the city's centre, around which the old quarter's winding lanes curl tightly.
Below the rock, the older neighbourhoods keep traditional Ottoman houses and mosques, while newer districts spread outward in straighter streets across the high plain of western Anatolia.
