Alfena is a town in the municipality of Valongo, on the northeastern edge of the Porto metropolitan area. It sits in gently hilly country crossed by the valley of the Leça river. On the map, older village cores with narrow, irregular streets are linked to one another and to newer residential developments by winding roads that follow the terrain.
Its position between the dense suburbs of Porto and the more rural land further inland is clear from above. Blocks of apartments and houses give way to fields, woodland and scattered hamlets. The river valley threads a soft green line through the frame, and main roads lead off toward Valongo, Ermesinde and the rest of greater Porto.
