Altos lies in the state of Piauí in north-eastern Brazil, about 40 kilometres east of Teresina, the state capital. From above, the town is a compact settlement surrounded by open country, with streets arranged around a central area and extending outward along the main roads. The landscape is broad and fairly level, and the edges of the map fade gradually into farmland and scrub.
The town sits on the highway linking Teresina with the east of the state, and that road forms a clear axis through the map.
