Appleton grew along the Fox River in north-eastern Wisconsin, and the river still defines its map. It cuts through the city in a wide, curving valley, with a series of locks and dams that once powered paper mills. Downtown sits on the bluff above the north bank, and the main street runs parallel to the water.
College Avenue is the city's central spine, and Lawrence University occupies the slope between the avenue and the river, its campus paths visible as a looser pattern among the blocks.
