Arcelia lies in Tierra Caliente, the hot lowland region of Guerrero. The name, which means hot land, fits it well. From above, the town shows a tight, fairly regular pattern of blocks around a central core. Some streets run straight and some bend where the ground rises or dips. Past the last houses, the built-up area gives way quickly to open, lightly marked land.
This is a town where the street plan tells most of the story. The blocks near the centre are smaller and closer together, and they grow wider and looser towards the edges.
