Arucas sits on the northern slopes of Gran Canaria, a few kilometres inland from the Atlantic coast. Its compact historic centre has narrow streets packed around a central church, and the town is overlooked by the Montaña de Arucas, a volcanic cone whose summit gives wide views to the sea. The town is best known for the Church of San Juan Bautista, a neo-Gothic building of dark volcanic stone that towers over the surrounding rooftops. Arucas is also associated with banana growing and with the Arehucas rum distillery, one of the island's best-known producers.
