Seen from above, Ascot is shaped by one large feature: the racecourse, a long curved track that lies across the northern edge of the town. The High Street runs close to its southern flank, and the rest of the settlement spreads out in loose clusters rather than a tight grid. The racecourse was founded in 1711 by Queen Anne, and Royal Ascot, held each June, remains one of the best-known meetings on the British racing calendar.
