Bad Bentheim lies in the far west of Lower Saxony, just across the border from the Netherlands. The town is dominated by Bentheim Castle, which sits on a sandstone ridge rising above the surrounding flat country. On a map, the old town wraps around the foot of the castle hill, while newer districts spread out over the lower land.
The ridge itself is the source of Bentheim sandstone, which was quarried for centuries and shipped widely, especially to the Netherlands, where it was used in many important buildings.
