Baise lies in the far west of Guangxi, where the You River runs through a narrow valley between hills and karst ranges. The city follows the water, spreading along both banks in a long band, with hillsides pushing in close. The shape is elongated and uneven, and the road network rises and bends wherever the slopes allow.
In 1929 Baise was the site of the Baise Uprising, a Communist revolt associated with Deng Xiaoping, and the city keeps a memorial to that event. The surrounding region is known for its mango orchards and is home to a large Zhuang population. Mountainous land reaches west towards Yunnan and north towards Guizhou.
