Baishikante lies in the Kashgar region of southwestern Xinjiang, on the edge of the Tarim Basin. Here the Taklamakan Desert meets a band of irrigated farmland fed by rivers coming down from the Pamir and Kunlun mountains. From above, the town sits within a patchwork of fields divided by canals and rows of poplars, the classic pattern of a Central Asian oasis.
Life in this part of Xinjiang is closely tied to water. Irrigation channels branch across the landscape, and villages and towns follow them in long, green strips.
