Bălţi sits in the north of Moldova on the Răut River, in the gently rolling country usually called the Bălţi steppe. From above, the city is a tight grid of streets and courtyard blocks around a central square. Around that core are wider bands of mid-century housing estates, and past them the long straight roads that run out into fields.
The Răut runs along the edge of the built-up area, and its low banks are marked by green patches and small bodies of water. The name is usually linked to the Romanian word for marshes or puddles, which fits the low, damp ground the river once shaped. On a map, that watery edge contrasts clearly with the regular blocks further uphill.
Often called Moldova's northern capital, Bălţi has long been a market and rail town for the surrounding agricultural region.
