Barreiras lies in the far west of Bahia, where the Rio Grande cuts a valley through the high plains of the cerrado. The city grew along the river. On the map, the older streets follow the banks, and a broader grid spreads across the flatter land beyond. Bridges carry the main roads over the water and join the neighbourhoods on either side.
Today Barreiras is a regional centre for one of Brazil's large agricultural frontiers, where farms on the western Bahia plateau grow soy, cotton and corn.
