Bartow is the county seat of Polk County in central Florida, and its centre follows the tidy grid of an older Southern courthouse town. Streets run in straight lines from the historic courthouse square. Brick commercial blocks give way to residential streets lined with oaks, and past them larger parcels, highways and open land spread outward.
Water shapes the landscape around the town. Central Florida is dotted with lakes, and the Peace River begins close to Bartow before winding south toward the Gulf of Mexico. On a map the river and its wetlands form soft, irregular shapes against the regular town grid. The area is also known for phosphate mining, which has left its own marks on the land further out.
The town is named after Francis S. Bartow, a Confederate officer. Its old courthouse, built in the early twentieth century, now serves as a history centre.
