Baunatal does not have a single old core. The town was created in the 1960s by joining several villages along the small Bauna stream. From above you can still see them as separate clusters of streets, each with its own irregular historic centre. Newer housing, schools and shopping areas, laid out in wider and more planned curves, join them together.
The largest shape on the map is the Volkswagen plant, a vast rectangle of halls and yards that sits apart from the residential streets and dwarfs everything else in the frame. Motorway links and rail sidings run around it.
