Bend lies in central Oregon, on the dry eastern side of the Cascade Range. The Deschutes River runs through the city from south to north and widens into Mirror Pond beside Drake Park in the old downtown. On a map the river is the defining line. It curves between neighbourhoods, while the street grid changes angle and density from one side to the other.
Bend began as a timber town, and the tall smokestacks of a former sawmill still stand in the Old Mill District, now a riverside area of shops and trails. On the east side, Pilot Butte, an extinct cinder cone, rises within city limits and shows as a neat circle of open ground. Mount Bachelor and the Cascade peaks lie to the west.

A volcanic cinder cone rises from the east side of the city. Its rounded summit and spiralling road leave a distinctive circular shape among the surrounding streets.
Old Mill District
