Blackwood lies in the Sirhowy Valley in the county borough of Caerphilly, South Wales. Like many valley towns, it is long and narrow. The high street runs along the higher ground, and residential streets, many of them terraced, extend down the slopes toward the river and the valley floor.
The town has a notable place in Welsh history and culture. The area was closely involved in the Chartist movement, which organised the Newport Rising of 1839 in these valleys. More recently, Blackwood became known as the home town of the Manic Street Preachers, whose early songs drew on life in the valleys.
