Blantyre sits in the Shire Highlands of southern Malawi, and the map makes the terrain obvious. Hills including Ndirande, Soche and Michiru rise around the city, and roads curve between them rather than forming a grid. The urban area stretches along the valleys toward Limbe, with which Blantyre forms a single city.
Founded as a Church of Scotland mission in the 1870s, the city takes its name from the Scottish town where David Livingstone was born. The mission's Church of St Michael and All Angels, built by missionaries from locally made bricks, is still one of its best-known buildings. Today Blantyre is Malawi's main commercial centre.
