Brawley sits in California's Imperial Valley, a desert basin below sea level that irrigation from the Colorado River turned into farmland. From above, the town is a compact grid of blocks. A commercial core sits in the middle, and residential streets run in straight lines until they meet the fields. Past that edge the landscape becomes a patchwork of rectangles, each bounded by a road or a ditch and repeated almost to the horizon.
The New River runs past the western side of town. Its winding channel is one of the few curved lines in a place otherwise made of right angles.
