Caerphilly lies in a basin north of Cardiff, where the Rhymney valley opens out beneath Caerphilly Mountain. Its centre is dominated by Caerphilly Castle, built in the thirteenth century by Gilbert de Clare and regarded as the largest castle in Wales and one of the largest in Britain.
The castle's concentric walls and extensive water defences are clearly visible on a map.
