Caojie is a town in Hechuan District, in the northern part of Chongqing Municipality, set in the hilly country where the Jialing River runs south toward its meeting with the Yangtze. On a map, the built area follows the lie of the land rather than a grid, with streets bending along slopes and gathering close to the river.
The Jialing is the defining feature here. Its broad channel loops through the landscape, and the town gives its name to a large navigation and hydropower project on the river.
