Carnaubal lies in the Serra da Ibiapaba, the long plateau that runs along the border between Ceará and Piauí. Up here the air is cooler and the land greener than in the sertão below. The town takes its name from the carnaúba, the wax palm closely associated with northeastern Brazil. From above, it appears as a compact grid of streets surrounded by small farms and patches of woodland.
The plateau breaks off to the east in a steep escarpment toward the lowlands. The town's roads link it to neighbouring municipalities along the top of the serra and down into the valleys. On a poster the result is a tidy centre around the main square, with country roads spreading outward across the upland fields.
