Casamassima sits on the gently rising ground inland from Bari, and from above it shows two clear layers. At the centre is a compact old town of narrow lanes, packed so close that the streets look like fine cracks in a single block. The old centre is known locally as the blue town, because many houses in the historic quarter were traditionally painted blue.
