Celje lies in a broad basin in eastern Slovenia, where the Savinja River swings past the town and the smaller Voglajna joins it. The historic centre is small and close-set, bounded by the lines of its former walls, and newer districts spread across the flat valley floor to the north. To the south, forested hills rise steeply and cut the street pattern off abruptly.
The town has a long past. It was the Roman settlement of Celeia, and in the late Middle Ages it was the seat of the Counts of Celje, one of the most powerful noble families in the region. Their Old Castle stands on a ridge above the river. On a map it is a small, isolated mark set among the contour-like curves of hill roads.
