Challans is a market town in the northwest of the Vendée, a short distance inland from the Atlantic coast. On a map, its old centre is a tight cluster of streets meeting at a few central squares. Around it, broader roads form a loose ring, and newer neighbourhoods and business areas extend outward along the main routes.
West of the town, the land changes character. The flat Marais Breton, a marsh area crossed by drainage channels, begins nearby.
