Chapecó is the main city of western Santa Catarina, in the south of Brazil, and its layout is unusually regular for a hilly site. The centre was planned around a long, wide central avenue, and a grid of straight streets was laid over undulating terrain. On a map the blocks look disciplined, while the creeks and wooded ravines between neighbourhoods bend freely around them.
The city grew as a centre of agribusiness, and large meat-processing and food companies have deep roots here.
