Chengqiao is a town on Chongming Island, the large alluvial island at the mouth of the Yangtze River that belongs to Shanghai. It has long been the administrative centre of Chongming, and on a map it is the densest cluster of streets on an island that is otherwise mostly farmland, wetland and village.
The island was built up from river sediment, and the land is almost completely flat. That shows in the map: long, straight roads and drainage channels divide the countryside into rectangles, and the town's streets follow a similar orderly pattern.
