Chetwayi lies on the coast of Thrissur district in Kerala, on the narrow band of land between the Arabian Sea and the backwaters behind it. From above, the shape is long and thin, with the straight edge of the beach on one side, a strip of settlement in the middle and the irregular lines of lagoons and channels on the other.
Settlement here is spread out rather than concentrated. Houses sit among coconut groves along lanes that run parallel to the shore, and a main road runs up the spine of the strip. The water to either side leaves little room for anything else.
