Chios is the main town of the island of the same name in the northeastern Aegean. It sits on the east coast, facing Turkey's Çeşme peninsula across a narrow strait. On a map the harbour is its centre of gravity: a rounded basin enclosed by breakwaters, with the waterfront curving around it and streets rising behind toward the hills.
At the northern end of the harbour stands the Kastro, a fortified medieval quarter whose walls enclose a small maze of lanes that shows clearly in the street pattern.
