Chirchiq lies northeast of Tashkent, in the valley of the river it is named after, where the plains begin to rise towards the western ranges of the Tian Shan. It was founded in the 1930s as an industrial town built around hydroelectric power and a large chemical plant, and its layout still reflects that planned origin.
From above, the town is organised on long, straight avenues and large blocks of Soviet-era apartment buildings, with industrial zones on the edges. Canals drawn off the river run through and around the town, supplying the hydroelectric stations and irrigation, and they add long, precise lines to the map.
