Commack is a hamlet in Suffolk County on Long Island, straddling the boundary between the towns of Huntington and Smithtown. Like much of central Long Island, it grew quickly after the Second World War, as farmland gave way to residential subdivisions linked by new highways to jobs in New York City and closer business centres.
On a map the area is defined by its roads. Jericho Turnpike runs east to west through the hamlet, while the Sunken Meadow State Parkway and the Long Island Expressway pass close by. Between them, residential streets loop and curve in the manner of mid-century planned developments, with schools, parks and shopping centres set along the main routes.
The place predates its suburban growth by a long way, and a few older roads still follow routes laid down when this was farming country.
