Cukai is the main town of Kemaman district, at the southern end of Terengganu on Peninsular Malaysia's east coast. From above it is organised around the Kemaman River, which loops through the flat coastal plain before reaching the South China Sea, with the town centre built close to its banks and residential areas spreading along the roads leading away.
The surrounding landscape is low and green: plantations, patches of wetland and villages linked by coastal roads, with the East Coast Expressway running further inland.
