Deerfield sits on the North Shore, north of Chicago, and from above it looks like many older Illinois suburbs, only calmer. Curving residential streets and cul-de-sacs fill the blocks between a few straight arterial roads. Long strips of green follow the waterways, and a commuter rail line runs through town on its way south into the city. The street pattern is quiet and even, with nothing forced into a strict grid.
The town is known mainly as the home of the Walgreens corporate headquarters, and it also has a university campus.
