Depok lies on the southern edge of greater Jakarta, in West Java, on the way toward Bogor. It grew quickly as a residential city for people working in the capital, and much of it was built around the commuter railway that runs north to south through its centre. On a map it looks less like one core and more like a series of neighbourhoods strung along roads and rail.
The Ciliwung River winds through the city from the south, cutting a curving green corridor through the housing, and a number of small lakes, known locally as situ, appear as scattered pools across the map.
